Finding Light in the Darkness
Depression can feel like a heavy fog that clouds your thoughts, drains your energy, and distorts your sense of self. For Christians, this emotional weight can be compounded by confusion, guilt, or the false belief that faith alone should be enough to "snap out of it." But the truth is, depression is a complex and often deeply rooted condition—one that affects mind, body, and spirit.
At Christi Young Counseling, we approach depression with both psychological insight and spiritual compassion. One powerful framework we use is Internal Family Systems (IFS), a model of therapy that helps clients understand and heal the different "parts" within themselves. Combined with Christian principles of grace, renewal, and identity in Christ, IFS offers a path to clarity and hope.
What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?
IFS teaches that the mind is made up of sub-personalities or “parts,” each with its own feelings, beliefs, and roles. Some of these parts may carry burdens of pain or trauma (like a sad or anxious part), while others may act as protectors, working hard to keep you functioning (like a perfectionist or people-pleasing part).
In depression, these parts can become overwhelmed. For example:
A hopeless part may feel like nothing will ever get better.
A critical part may say you're not doing enough.
A numbing part might push you to isolate or sleep too much.
Through IFS, you learn to connect with these parts from a centered, compassionate “Self”—the calm, curious core of who you are. This “Self” is where healing begins.
Faith and Depression: What Scripture Reminds Us
The Bible is full of people who struggled with depression-like symptoms. David wrote psalms of despair. Elijah asked God to take his life. Even Jesus wept and sweat drops of blood in anguish.
Depression is not a sign of weak faith—it’s a signal that your heart, mind, and body need care. As Psalm 34:18 reminds us: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Self-Help Tips for Depression
(Through the Lens of IFS and Christian Faith)
1. Talk to Your Parts with CompassionWhen you feel the heaviness of depression, pause and check in:
“What part of me is feeling this way?”
“What does this part want me to know?”
Try to approach your internal world with the same kindness you would offer a hurting friend. This simple act creates space for healing.
2. Practice Scripture-Based AffirmationMany parts carry messages of shame or unworthiness. You can gently challenge these with God’s truth:
“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:14)
“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)
Let the Word re-parent those hurting parts with grace.
3. Move Your Body, Even a Little
A depressed part may resist activity, but movement is one of the most powerful ways to shift internal energy. Go for a short walk, stretch, or simply sit outside. Tell your body it’s safe and cared for.
4. Stay Connected to the Body of Christ
Depression often isolates. Reach out to a trusted friend, pastor, or small group—even if it’s just to say, “I’m struggling.” Your parts may feel like a burden, but connection is a vital tool for healing.
5. Create Rhythms of Rest and Reflection

Schedule time to be with God in a way that feels nurturing—not pressured. This may look like journaling with your parts, reading a Psalm aloud, or sitting in silence, inviting the Holy Spirit to minister to your inner world.
When to Seek Help
If your depression feels persistent, intense, or is interfering with your daily life, professional counseling can offer the support you need. In therapy, we can walk with you through the darkness—helping you understand your parts, uncover the burdens they carry, and restore connection with your God-given Self.
There is hope. There is healing. And you don’t have to go through this alone.
If you’re ready to begin your healing journey through Christian counseling and IFS, I’d be honored to walk alongside you. Contact Christi Young Counseling today to schedule a session.
